Joseph P. Iddings, geologist, petrologist, and petrographer, was born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 21, 1857. He received the Ph. B. degree from the Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University in 1877. In 1879-1880 he studied under Prof. Harry Rosenbusch at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. In 1880 he began work in the U.S. Geological Survey with Arnold Hague in the Eureka district, Nevada; in 1883 he rejoined Hague on a survey of Yellowstone National Park, which continued to 1891. In 1892, Iddings left the USGS to join the faculty of the newly established geology department at the University of Chicago, where he remained until 1908, when he entered private life. Iddings died in Montgomery County, Maryland on September 20, 1920. Collection includes correspondence (1889-1933), notes, drafts and revisions of reports, summaries, and compilations. Topics include geologic studies in the U.S. and abroad, rock sample analysis, igneous rock classification and nomenclature, USGS activities, autobiography. Includes: from a planned autobiography, first draft of chapter based on letters written by Iddings to his family from Switzerland and from Heidelberg, Germany where he studied under Prof. Harry Rosenbusch, 1879-1880; plus 2 photos of Rosenbusch. In addition, manuscript and revisions of "Recollections of a Petrographer", completed and edited posthumously by Whitman Cross. Also: manuscript of Iddings' "Microscopical Petrography of the eruptive rocks" published in Arnold Hague's "Geology of the Eureka district, Nevada" (USGS Monograph 20. 1892); plus, manuscript of Iddings' "Petrographical Character of the Lavas" published in Charles D. Walcott's "Pre-Cambrian Igneous Rocks of the Unkar Terrane, Grand Canyon of the Colorado, Arizona," plus typed copy of part of Walcott's text--all published in "Fourteenth Annual Report of the [USGS] ... 1892-'93".
